Our earliest memories are often wrapped around music. Singing nursery rhymes in school, tapping feet to a favourite beat on the radio, listening grandma’s lullabies – sweet, musical memories that leave an indelible mark in our minds and souls. These rhymes and songs, also called mnemonics, are great tools to train the memory and the very reason why we remember them for years! Our Music Studio (OMS) is an early childhood music school in Singapore that helps build a solid foundation in music in children 0 to 7 years.
OMS believes that music is a powerful tool that stimulates the brain and encourages concentration and memory. In young children, music sparks off holistic development by working simultaneously on spatial, intellectual, gross motor and language skills. Combined with movement, music leads to kinesthetic awareness and promotes balance and mind-body co-ordination. Music also encourages social skills in the children and promotes familial bonding. Exposure to music from an early age encourages children to be more attentive and receptive, improving academic performance in school. Regular music lessons are said to greatly enhance spatial IQ in children. No wonder that these little Mozarts also become geniuses at Math!
OMS’s motto is to instill a lifelong love for music in children. Their age-oriented programmes start from newborn and continue through preschool. Musical Babes, lessons for children 0 to 1.5 years are aimed at stimulating brain development and encouraging precious parent-child bonding. Rythmic Tots is a fun-filled programme that caters to active little tots aged 1.5 to 3 years and promotes communication skills.
Melodic Kids engages budding young musicians aged 3 to 4.5 years with instrument play, drama, dance, games & storytelling. Young Musicians is designed to teach the nuances of musicianship to 4.5 to 6 year olds by introducing various musical instruments and allowing them to explore and appreciate the art of music.
OMS’s research-based curriculum is written by highly experienced music and movement teachers. It is based on Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner and Orff Schulwerk/Kodaly and Dalcroze to create a unique, magical methodology. This methodology is delivered by talented, passionate, well-qualified and professionally trained teachers by way of singing, dancing, playing of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments and drama. With a systematic and tiered approach, music lessons at OMS inculcate a sense of discipline while being a whole lot of fun!
OMS is also the first music school in Singapore to add songs in Mandarin, Malay and Tamil in its curriculum. OMS actively sources songs from around the world exposing children to a treasure trove of songs and rhymes that represent myriad cultures and languages. Besides their own school, OMS also conducts enrichment classes at over 70 childcare centres in Singapore through their dynamic Octaves programme.
