A cultural hub, Chinatown is the place everyone heads to during the CNY period to soak in the festive mood. This year, a rich line-up of traditional and cultural festivities, as well as new programmes has been organised by the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens’ Consultative Committee. We round up the activities that you must check out with the family this festive period.
Street Light-Up 2017
Beginning 7 January 2017, Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and South Bridge Road will welcome the year of the Rooster with handmade sculptured lanterns of roosters, hens and chicks. The contemporary lanterns are designed by 14 select students of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and are produced by 40 master craftsmen.
These lanterns represent 5 Chinese values- Early Bird Catches the First Worm, Filial Piety, Learning Through Trials, Living in Harmony, and Leadership. The Giant Rooster Lantern prides as being the longest centrepiece to ever be made for the street light-up (measuring 100m in length from its head to the end of its feather tails).
On 7 January 2017 from 6 to 10pm, join in the fun as the Official Light Up and Opening Ceremony takes place along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road. The event will feature performances by performing troupes, firecrackers and a grand fireworks display.
