Yes, babies are natural swimmers, it’s true. In fact, they already know how to breathe underwater thanks to their primal neo-natal instincts. Like most skills, swimming is best picked up from an early age. We’re talking right when they turn six-months-old. It may seem like a crazy thing to do, but introducing you baby to the pool early has some pretty awesome physical and cognitive benefits (read all about it in our latest issue!).

So how do go about teaching your baby to swim? Instead of tackling it on your own, it’s best to approach train experts who can best teach your baby in a safe and specially prepared environment. Today, you can find many swim schools that offer swimming classes catered for babies all over the island. To find one that will best suit you and your baby, here are some tips to choose the right one.

  1. Sit in for a lesson before you commit – It’s important for you to feel comfortable in the environment too! Dip your toes by requesting to watch an on-going class, this way you can get an idea of how the facility is run.
  2. Check the instructors out – Sounds like a no brainer, but you should ensure that the school has instructors qualified to teach as well as implement Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  3. Find one with a heated pool – It’s important for babies to start swimming in a heated pool above 30 degrees. Dunking them in a cold pool will make the experience traumatising.
  4. Make sure the classes are small with babies of similar age – The less chaotic the environment, the better for your fragile baby. A small group also ensures your child gets enough attention from her instructor.
  5. Is your baby chlorine sensitive? – In case your baby’s skin is sensitive, opt for a school with heated mineral pools.
